Forensic Nurse Certification Board of IAFN
SANE-P

March 29, 2007

The Forensic Nursing Certification Board Launches the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner - Pediatric/Adolescent Certification Examination! The exam application is now available online on IAFN's Certification Webpage or Click Here to download now. The deadline to register for the SANE-P Exam has been extended to April 13, 2007 with no late fees (SANE A applications not included in this extension). The test is May 5, 2007.

The Forensic Nursing Certification Board (FNCB) was established in 2002 as a functionally autonomous component of the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) to promote the highest standards of forensic nursing practice through the development, implementation, coordination and evaluation of all aspects of the certification and recertification process. FNCB is a member of the National Organization of Competency Assurance and utilizes testing methods that reflect quality standards of credentialing organizations. The first examination offered by the FNCB was the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner -Adult/Adolescent Certification Examination in 2002. Since that time, over 800 nurses across the world have been recognized as competent in this unique specialty of practice.

In 2005, FNCB initiated plans to develop a certification examination for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners who served pediatric and adolescent patients. The Center for Nursing Education and Testing (C-NET®), was chosen to develop and administer the SANE-P® certification examination. C-NET staff members have extensive experience in the development and administration of certification and licensure examinations for nurses, including the SANE-A® exam. FNCB President, Susan B. Patton, DNSc, appointed Julie Rosof-Williams, MSN to Chair an Ad Hoc Committee of individuals, recognized for their expertise in pediatric SANE practice. Members of the SANE-P Ad Hoc Committee include:

  • Julie Rosof-Williams, Chair
  • Elizabeth Andleman
  • Sharon Dickman
  • Diana Faugno
  • Colleen James
  • Julie Melini
  • Colleen O'Brien
  • Susan Patton
  • Jennifer Pierce-Weeks
  • Rusty Rooms
  • Pat Speck
  • Diana Schunn
  • Valerie Sievers

In September 2005, the Committee held its first meeting in Nashville, TN, to perform a logical analysis of SANE-P practice and construct the test blueprint, including a content outline, based on the current literature and expert practice. In February 2006, the Committee met a second time in Nashville to write test questions that corresponded to the specifications of the test blueprint.

Subsequently, representative photographs were selected for an online survey of experts, including nurses and physicians, to be used in the testing materials. These photographs, along with the previously written items, were combined to form two pilot tests, each of which consisted of 84 different multiple-choice questions and 40 photographs/questions. (Therefore, no person who took a pilot test saw the entire pool of test questions.) On September 30, 2006, thirty five nurses attending the IAFN Annual Scientific Assembly in Vancouver, Canada, took the SANE-P® pilot tests. From their feedback, the photographs/questions were modified for the second administration of the pilot tests at multiple test sites in the USA on October 5, 2006. After the pilot tests, the items were statistically analyzed and the best items from the pilot tests were assembled to form a draft of the SANE-P exam.

In March, 2007, in Memphis, TN, the representatives of the Ad Hoc Committee reviewed the draft and the item analysis statistics revised questions as needed, and established the final version of the SANE-P Certification Examination. The passing standard (percent correct required to pass the test) was established at about 80%, using a criterion-related method. Finally, eligibility criteria were established by unanimous approval of the Ad Hoc Committee and all members of the FNCB. We are pleased to offer what we believe is an excellent measure of competence that will benefit nurses in establishing credibility for the already excellent care they render to pediatric and adolescent victims of sexual assault.
