Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA) Provides Sexual Assault Resources to Hispanic Community with Launch of Spanish-Language Web site
Study Shows that Sexual Assault is of Great Concern to Hispanics

AUSTIN, Texas (September 26, 2003) – The Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA) launches a Spanish language version of its Web site (www.taasa.org) to provide sexual assault resources to a growing Hispanic audience in Texas, approximately 7.3 million Hispanics or 34 percent of the state’s population. According to a 2002 survey conducted by KRC Research, 58 percent of Hispanics view sexual assault as their biggest crime worry above murder and gang violence.

TAASA began to build understanding for sexual assault in the Hispanic community with an ongoing statewide public awareness campaign, “Speak Up. Speak Out,” in 2003. The campaign includes television, radio and print advertisements in both English and Spanish. The campaign features six Texas women telling their true stories of sexual assault, one of whom is Spanish speaking.

“We understand that a Spanish-language Web site is only one tool to address the need for sexual assault services in the Hispanic community,” said Annette Burrhus-Clay, executive director for TAASA. “We see this as an important move towards expanding access to our sexual assault services for different cultures in Texas so that everyone is aware of the resources available.”

Many of TAASA’s 70 sexual assault agencies have bilingual staff members to serve the needs of Hispanic Texans; however, 6 out of 10 adult Texans are not aware of the sexual assault services available in their communities. As only one of seven sexual assault coalitions in the country with a Web site completely dedicated to Spanish-language resources, TAASA hopes to carry its sexual assault message further into the Hispanic community.
